#1) Hankie Codes:
There's some variance across the USA, so looking at a national web-
site to get the information might mislead you to some incorrect
conclusions. The best way to find out is visit some of your local
leather stores and see if they have a hankie area where they are
selling lots of different colors. Then, typically, they either have
someone that can talk to you, or they will have a small card they can
hand out or one you can read in the store. Besides, going into the
stores for "research" is just another good excuse to go SHOPPING!
#2) Typically (stress that, word "typically") dominants wear a
leather band on his or her left side, while submissives wear a
leather band or symbol on the right. Can be done with name tags at
an event (left chest/breast-dominant; right submissive), rings on
fingers, etc.
Approaching a conversation when you aren't sure: I'm not shy, so my
way of finding out the person's interests would have been something
like walking up and saying "Hi. Great outfit. Is this something
that you wear only during Halloween (assuming it IS near Halloween)
or an outfit you like all the time?" Go from there.
Always best to ask, anyhow, about what someone is wearing if you
think he or she is throwing "codes". Consider the hankie or the
leather wrist band or the clothing style merely an opening to
initiate a conversation. You can't be sure whether people are using
the colors or the left/right thing. (Especially in Houston, where
nobody there understands the LEFT lane is for passing only).
